AROMATHERAPY VAPORIZER

A widely used method of employing essential oils in the home is to fragrance the room by menas of a vaporizer, or oil burner. Vaporizers are widely available, and range from the simple utilitarian version to the highly decorative, hand-crafted piece. Although they have come in many forms, they all work on the same principle. The reservoir, or receptacle, is filled with water, to which are added drops of essential ol. The reservoir is then heated, causing the water to evaporate and the warm oil to release its perfume.

CHOOSING AND USING A VAPORIZER

When choosing a vaporizer there are two important points to consider. First, there should be a suitable distance between the source of the heat and the reservoir for oil and water. This will reduce the risk of completely evaporating the water and therefore burning the oil. Second, the vaporizer should be easy to clean, ready for use witha different oil.

The simplest type of a vaporizer makes use of a candle as the heat source, a more efficient, but more expensive, type is the electric vaporizer. Under certain circumstances these are preferable to the type heated by a candle-for example in the reception area of an office, in a hospital ward, or at home, when you want to disperse oils for a long period of time without the necessity of frequent supervision. Some electric vaporizers have a silent fan that diserses the evaporating oils; others emply a heated ceramic dish.

The number of drops of oil used in a burner depends on the size of the room; two to three drops for a small room, and as many as six to ten for a larger one. It is better to use fewer drops and refresh the burner more frequently, rather than use too many and saturate a room with scent. Remember too that your sensitivity to the scent will decrease, but this does not mean that the aroma is not still present and probably still quite strong.

If you do not have a vaporizer, or you feel the need for an instant aromatherapy treatment, try applying just a few drops of oil to a handkerchief or paper towel and gently inhaling the perfume. Placing the hankerchief on your pillow at night should ease breathing if you have a blocked nose; some oils will help promote a good night's sleep. It is not wise to take essential oils as a medicine except on the advice of a practitioner, but some people do you essential oils in tea, adding two or three drops of a suitable oil to a pot of black tea for digestive problems, urinary problems or stress.

One of the best things about aromatherapy is the pleasure to be derived from the aromas; keeping healthy can be enjoyable and fun.
